ESSENTIALS [12 Jul 2005|10:42pm]
[ mood | non-murderous (for now) ]
[ music | Muse - "Bliss" ]

If you were stranded on a desert island with a CD player and ten albums of your choice, what would they be?

The Butthole Surfers - Electriclarryland (1996): Electriclarryland, simply put, is a hidden gem that is overlooked by far too many listeners of all kinds of rock music. Electriclarryland was, more than anything, a sign that the band was maturing from their incredibly bizarre style of the '80s, moving toward a more mainstream-friendly sound, which they apparently accomplished with this album and their biggest mainstream hit "Pepper." The guitar on this record is absolutely incredible, seriously, run down to your nearest record store and pick it up.

Weezer - "Pinkerton" (1995): My all-time favorite album. A lot of people don't 'get' this album, not to say that it went over their heads, because I can certainly understand their position - this is not your average Weezer record. Anyone who tries to tell you it's somehow deeper or more profound than Weezer's other albums is completely missing the point of "Pinkerton." It's a raw and simple story, a borderline-concept album about a misunderstood, shy outcast's search for love. It pretty well covers the ups and downs, the hits and misses, and the track "Pink Triangle" shows that it doesn't try to take itself too seriously either. A simple masterpiece.

Queens of the Stone Age - "Songs for the Deaf" (2002): Queens of the Stone Age are my favorite band, and it was very tempting to put more than one of their albums on this list. "Songs for the Deaf" works for me on every single level. Dave Grohl lays down incredible drums as you would expect, Josh Homme's wailing guitar riffs carry every track brilliantly, and everything just fits perfectly. A great record from every angle.

Frank Zappa - "Apostrophe (')" (1974): The first Frank Zappa I ever heard, and it remains my favorite of all his albums. Zappa, throughout his career, was one of the most prolific musicians of all time and had a nasty tendency to cram everything he could onto each of his albums, which wasn't always a bad thing, but often took away from the focus of his records (see disc two of "Joe's Garage"). Not so with Apostrophe, which clocks in at just under thirty minutes. Of course, this is not to say that it's a minimalistic album by anyone's standard's, except maybe Zappa's. The musicianship on this record is, as always, top-notch, and every song has an off-the-wall quality that makes "Apostrophe" very endearing.

Muse - "Origin of Symmetry" (2001): My introduction to Muse was "Absolution," which, unlike most of my favorite albums, clicked for me immediately. When I first heard "Origin of Symmetry," it was the same way, to an even greater extent. Matt Bellamy has a talent for making his music so over-the-top, so dramatic and cinematic, it almost gives the music a larger-than-life quality. Many call Muse a Radiohead ripoff, but I disagree. Bellamy has proven to be an incredibly skillful songwriter and a very mature musician since his mediocre debut with "Showbiz." Muse is a band that seems to take itself extremely seriously, particularly on this album, but it manages to get away with it, an even more remarkable feat considering how young they are.

Radiohead - "The Bends" (1995): Radiohead was one of the best bands of the 1990's, hands down. In 1995, when "The Bends" came out, nobody was ready for it. 1993's "Pablo Honey," while a solid debut, was no preparation for this incredible follow-up. Of the incredible one-two-three of "The Bends," "OK Computer," and "Kid A," this one is doubtlessly my favorite, and one of the best alternative albums I've ever heard.

Alkaline Trio - "Maybe I'll Catch Fire" (2000): Alkaline Trio is one of my favorite current bands, and (aside from Green Day) the only punk band I can really get into these days. They're simply one of the catchiest bands out there today and I knew they had to make this list somehow, the only tough part was deciding which album to pick. In the end, I picked "Maybe I'll Catch Fire" because, while the darker melodies and themes of "Good Mourning" and "From Here to Infirmary" are very catchy and easy to listen to, "Maybe I'll Catch Fire" has an anthemic singalong quality that makes every song incredibly infectious. Don't believe me? Just fill your car with friends and go speed somewhere while blasting "Fuck You Aurora." You'll get it.

Red Hot Chili Peppers - "BloodSugarSexMagik" (1991): Anthony Kiedis is the fucking king. This is another album where absolutely everything fit together perfectly; this was the album where John Frusciante first really showed off his chops at the guitar, but the real stars of this one were Anthony Kiedis and Flea. This was the album where the Chili Peppers proved they were more than just a bunch of juvenile kids who played absurdist funk music. Classics like "Under the Bridge" pretty much set the tone for their entire career from BSSM up to this point.

My Life with the Thrill Kill Kult - "Kooler Than Jesus" (1990): I had to represent dance rock somewhere on this list, so here we go. My Life with the Thrill Kill Kult was probably the most under-recognized catalyst of the (largely terrible) underground industrial movement of the 1990s. The Thrill Kill Kult was one band that never really took itself seriously, they've spent their 15+ year long career making fun dance songs about sex, partying, and of course, Satan. This record, with its B-movie quotes and driving beats, is the very definition of a cult classic album, and a perfect example of what My Life with the Thrill Kill Kult is all about.

Blind Guardian - "A Nightfall in Middle-Earth" (1998): My favorite heavy metal album. Throughout this meandering concept album based on J.R.R. Tolkien's classic "The Silmarillion," Blind Guardian maintains an incredible unwavering seriousness about the tale that it is meant to tale, a difficult task to say the least when converting a fantasy novel into a heavy metal rock opera. This album is an EPIC, and it won't let you dare forget with its shrieking guitar soloes and grandiose Queen-esque choral refrains. Music doesn't really get much more over-the-top than this, but rather than ridiculing it, it's better to sit back, close your eyes, and marvel at what a bunch of obsessed German nerds can accomplish when they put their minds to it.

[ music | Blind Guardian - "NIIIIIIIIIGHTFAAAAAAALL!" ]

Been working a shit-ton lately, it's cool though because I'm really starting to like some of the people from tha VF. Good times in tha ticketbooth:

David: Ha, look at that one, she's still got the tag on her shirt!
Lindsey: Wow, it takes a special breed of faggot to pull something like that.

David: Okay, you can just go straight to the front gate.
Dumbass Guest: Which one's the front gate?
David: ...The one that's in the front.

Lindsey: (To a five-year-old that was tapping on the side of the booth) STOP BANGING ON THE WALL, YOU LITTLE SHIT!

Lindsey: Hey Marissa, how's it going?
Marissa: What?
David: She said you're a cocksucking, inbred, smelly homo.
Lindsey: I didn't say that!
David: And also you're fat.

Brittany: Ugh, what is that smell?!
David: I think someone made a boom-boom.

Batman Rules the Universe [26 Jun 2005|09:08pm]
[ mood | nerdy ]
[ music | Shudder to Think - "Hit Liquor" ]

I'm hopelessly addicted to everything Batman right now. Since I saw the movie, it's been a rabid craving almost on par with heroin withdrawals. It's fun. I borrowed Rob's Batman: The Animated Series DVD set and I've been watching that in my spare time these days, show's pretty hit-and-miss, most of the episodes are at least pretty good, but some of 'em just absolutely suck. There is one episode featuring the vocal talents of Adam West, which totally rocks. Yeah... I'm a huge nerd. Also picked up Batman: Year One at Shinders today, haven't had a chance to get into it yet, but I'm looking forward to it.

Been working pretty much non-stop, it's been getting a lot better. I've learned how to avoid the annoying people (and that's a good percentage of my area), and a couple of the worst ones are on the verge of getting fired at this point, so it's all good, right? After work on Friday night I went to Pizza Hut with my brother and some of his friends from rides, that was a lot of fun, his supervisor is fuckin' hilarious. Rides night last Thursday was a lot of fun too. The really important thing though is that I've been keeping busy. Summer can suck a ridiculous amount of balls if you spend it bored, so although I haven't had a lot of free time with the job and all, that's not necessarily a bad thing.

In other news, I set up my Audioscrobbler account again because my old one stopped working for no apparent reason. The new username is King Awesome, as far as I know, Jenny is the only one on LJ who's also on Audioscrobbler, but Jenny, add me and shit. Yeah.

I'm gonna go watch Batman.

[ music | The Pixies - "Debaser" ]

Well, my computer has been dead for the past week or so, meaning I haven't updated in a little while, so here's what's up.

The rumors were true, fuck bitches, all that jazz. At least I can take some comfort in the fact that while a lot of broads are total bitches, this particular one was just an oblivious, immature child. I'm still pretty bitter, but life goes on, right? The way I see it, I'm overdue for one of these things to work out.

"I've been wasting all my time trying to make you smile, trying to make this seem worthwhile"

There, I think Cake summed it up pretty well there. Let us close this chapter and never speak of it again. Well, we can still speak of it I guess.

I've been working a lot lately, which is cool because it keeps me busy and keeps the dollaz comin' in. I really want to make some new friends this summer, but it's hard because I don't know where to look. The people at work are nice, I guess, I just wouldn't go out of my way to spend time with them.

Batman Begins fucking rocks. So nice I saw it twice. Christian Bale is the man, Morgan Freeman is the man, Liam Neeson is the man, Gary Oldman is the man, Michael Caine is the man, and SCARECROW IS IN THIS MOVIE! Nothing about it didn't kick ass. See it now. Or tomorrow. Or, you know, just whenever you have the time. Anyway, I'm out for tonight, it's hotter than fuck in here. Later kids.

I really hope the shit I'm hearing isn't true. You know, bad luck works as an explanation for awhile, but after a certain amount of time you're gonna realize that you must be doing something wrong.

[ music | The Shins - "Girl On the Wing" ]

Last night, on the other side of the ocean, we lost one of the nicer guys I've ever met. Late on the night of June 1st, 2005, Dave "Buddha" Barron died after catching malaria while hunting snakes in Africa. Medicine failed to have any effect on his condition and he slipped into a coma last night from a secondary infection of meningitis. This probably doesn't mean much to most of you and I'd be lying if I said that I knew him all that well, but from my experience Buddha was one of the nicest, most intelligent guys I've ever had the privilege of knowing in any capacity, and from what I've heard that's a pretty much universal emotion.

As a footnote, his last words were "This vacation sucks."

RIP Buddha, I hope you get reincarnated as something kickass.

[ mood | depressed ]
[ music | Wilco - "Hummingbird" ]

You meet so many people throughout life, and whether it really means anything or not, you just kind of take it for granted that they're always gonna be there. Kind of funny the way shit happens sometimes. This is so surreal.

Come on Dave, you can beat this shit, malaria's no match for a scary motherfucker like you.

I know they're not reading this, but thoughts and prayers go out to Buddha, Phoebe, and the rest.

Faithless is finished. I have to say I'm pretty pleased with the outcome, I think the ending turned out pretty good. Final page count comes to 64 on Microsoft Word, too much to post on here, but if you would like to read it, comment in response to this post with your e-mail address and I shall send it to you. As always, feedback is greatly appreciated.

[ music | Chevelle - "Don't Fake This" ]

I just watched Run Lola Run, it was fucked up. Franka Potente is kinda cute.

Saw Team America last night, it was fucked up. That blonde puppet was a far better actress than Natalie Portman.

Been reading the Autobiography of Malcolm X, it's pretty good so far, except the beginning part that his daughter wrote. Good lord that broad can ramble.

STAR WARZ, etc. [29 May 2005|07:06pm]
[ mood | happy ]
[ music | Frank Zappa - "Packard Goose" ]

Saw the new Star Wars the other night, I gotta say it pretty much kicked ass, although this gay guy in front of us got really mad at me and Anthony because we kept laughing at parts that weren't supposed to be funny. For example, I really cracked up right before Anakin massacred all those children. What can I say, I just REALLY hate child actors. All in all, it was a really solid movie, it wasn't a TORSO, but it sure wasn't a fully intact human being either. I'll go into more depth later, I gotta go for now.

Prom, etc. [22 May 2005|09:39pm]
[ mood | cranky ]
[ music | Frank Sinatra - "That's Life" ]

Hope y'all had a good Rock Out With Your Cock Out Weekend for those of you who went to prom and a good prom weekend for those of you who did!

Prom was utterly amazing, I had a great time and Jessie really seemed to enjoy meeting Ethan + company. I had the most incredibly pimp-ass tux, and my shoes and vest were really shiny. It was mesmerizing.

The past two days, on the other hand, have left something to be desired. Yesterday I had to clean up a bunch of shit in the basement (although I also managed to find time to watch Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and Big Fish, which was a relief). Then I worked from 9:30 to 6:30 today, and now I'm helping my parents move all their stuff out of their bedroom because they're getting new flooring done. I just had to haul an armoire down a set of stairs, that was incredibly fun. Anyway, I'll leave you with something happy.

[ mood | happy ]
[ music | Dean Martin - "Ain't That a Kick in the Head" ]

Well, things have improved significantly since my last entry, I'm pretty much over the plague and Prom is only a couple days away. I'm pretty excited just to wear the tux, that's gonna be incredibly classy and badass and I'll make sure to get pictures up on here as soon as I can because I know you all want to see that.

I've been watching a shitload of movies lately, in the past week and a half I've watched The Manchurian Candidate, The Maltese Falcon, Casablanca, Natural Born Killers, Tora! Tora! Tora!, Ocean's Eleven (the original), From Dusk Till Dawn, Equilibrium, and Gangs of New York. There are probably one or two I'm forgetting. Seriously though, The Rat Pack owns all of your asses.

This is SO GAY! I've had the plague for four days, and while it's given me time to catch up on my lounging and watching a shitload of movies, it's also given me time to catch up on being incredibly bored.

Oh, and I'm so underappreciated.

OH MAN! [02 May 2005|08:40pm]

[ music | Blondie - "Just Go Away" ]

Today ROCKED. I skipped fourth hour because there was this project I hadn't done and I wanted to avoid punishment, so me and Rob went to Cheapo instead and get this. I got Blondie's platinum collection (47 songs, including unreleased tracks and B-sides) for about SIX BUCKS. It was PHENOMENAL. The new haircut attracted many ladies.

By the way, I've been writing this story for my Creative Writing class and I'd like some feedback from those of you who aren't idiots. Sorry about the weird spacing, I e-mailed this to myself.

[ music | Blind Guardian - "And Then There Was Silence" ]

This has not been a good weekend. Friday was alright, Saturday night was a blast, but all day today I just didn't feel quite right. After talking to Cody last night, it just feels like there are so many things in my life that don't quite fit. I'm sick of high school, I'm sick of everyone's drama, I'm sick of Minnesota weather, and I'm really fucking sick of being so goddamn confused.

I am such a tragic hero.

Crippling despair isn't the right term, but it's the first one that comes to mind.
